No, the exam is not open book. It is proctored, you cannot even have a pen and paper beside you, but they do provide you with a digital note pad.
Registrants generally perform well on the exam. The average pass rate on the exam over the past 8 years has been 85%
In order to fulfill the requirements for registration as a Registered Psychotherapist (RP), all Qualifying members are required to write the registration exam (also known as the Canadian Professional Standard for Counselling and Psychotherapy (CPSCP): Entry to Practice Competency Assessment
A Qualifying registrant who attempted but did not successfully pass the Registration Exam can continue to practise with clinical supervision while preparing to retake it at the next available sitting. Upgrading activities may be required if you fail the second attempt and before the third and final attempt can be made.
The Registration Examination includes two primary types of questions, presented within simulations that assess both knowledge and clinical judgment. Each simulation is divided into three components:
1. Scenario
The scenario provides an overview of the setting and introductory client information. This may include details such as the client’s age, gender, and presenting concerns.
2. Information-Gathering (IG) Sections
These sections focus on gathering essential details about the client that will inform your clinical understanding. This may involve exploring areas such as:
- Family background
- Physical health status
- Previous experience in therapy
- Demographics or symptom severity
The goal of Information-Gathering questions is to answer the question: “As a therapist, what do I need to know?”
Instructions:
- Directions in these sections will include the phrase: “SELECT AS MANY.”
- Test-takers select their choices by clicking on the circle to the left of the options they believe are most relevant. When a choice is selected, the corresponding information appears directly below it.
- Keep in mind: On the actual exam, you cannot view the information unless you actively select the option.
Example: In your first meeting with Lucia, what details would best help you determine potential directions for therapy at this time?
3. Decision-Making (DM) Sections
These sections test your ability to make clinical judgments and determine appropriate next steps. They may involve evaluating:
- The client’s motivation and readiness to change
- Ethical considerations
- Professional boundaries
- The therapist’s application of interventions
Decision-Making questions aim to answer the question: “As a therapist, what actions should I take?”
There are two types of Decision-Making sections:
- Multiple Options: Several actions may be appropriate, and test-takers are instructed to “SELECT AS MANY.” After selecting all relevant actions, click the “next” icon to continue.
- Single Best Option: While multiple responses may be acceptable, one option is considered the most appropriate.
Example: As you plan for the next session, which of the following actions would be most helpful to initiate a collaborative plan with your client?
Exam Emphasis
While both Information-Gathering and Decision-Making are important, there is a greater focus on Decision-Making questions. This reflects the reality of clinical practice, where the ability to act effectively is often more critical than simply knowing the information
